7 Essential Merchandising Tips to Boost DME Sales

How the store looks overall is the number one influencer on consumer behavior. It is essential to showcase the product in the most appealing way.

Great visual merchandising not only guides them easily to the item they came in for, but keeps them browsing for additional items. Creating attractive displays through signage, arrangement, lighting, music, shelving, and more makes for a great shopping experience.

How can you make the most of your retail space?  Here are some tips:

1. Bundle Similar Products
Grouping products in bundles provides the customer options to add on to their purchase. It’s very important to have products placed near complementary items. For example, CPAP Masks should be placed with CPAP Wipes, Contour’s CPAPMax pillows, and custom pillowcases, straps, sanitizers and other CPAP accessories.

2. The Rule of Three
The rule of thumb is to arrange items in groups of three to create balance and symmetry. Shoppers are more likely to stop when they see symmetrical or balanced designs. When you can use the "pyramid principle," with one item at the top, and all other items “one step down,” it forces the eye to look at the focal point and then work its way down. Color coordinate when possible.

3. Engage the Senses

Hearing: Music affects how customers interact in the store. Try a playlist with a slow, soft beat to lessen the pace so that the customer doesn’t feel rushed and browses in your store longer.
Sight: From colors to lighting, you can use visual cues to communicate your message.  Colors provide a psychological trigger; for instance, green and blue tend to bring on feelings of calm, while bright colors such as red and yellow evoke feelings of excitement. Also, the background color in product displays should be unobtrusive – colors such as beige, white, and light shades of cool colors can help keep consumer attention focused on the main color and products used in a display. Use spotlights to highlight certain products and direct attention to your top products.
Touch: Provide a sample that allows the customer to feel the product and maybe try it out. For example, leave a Twist Pillow (out of package) near the display and checkout – customers enjoy bending and shaping it into a wide variety of fun and comfortable positions for neck and head support.
Smell: The sense of smell is more strongly associated with memory and connects shoppers on an emotional level. Use sparingly though; many customers are sensitive.
Taste: If you're selling food or drink products, create a sample table of favorites.

4. Use Compelling Signage
Create signage that not only engages your customers, but moves your product almost as well as your best trained salesperson. Keep your signs short and to the point. Use a large, clean font (no curly-cues or multiple colors) making it easy for older customers to read. Also, incorporate the words you or yours to make the message stronger.

5. Change It Up
Holidays and seasons only last so long - update your displays and layouts regularly to give frequent shoppers the exciting prospect of discovering something new.

6. Spark Impulse Buys at the Checkout
Maximize the potential of your checkout counter by stocking the surrounding area with relevant, reasonably priced, and useful or delightful items. For instance, stack the Contour Flip Pillow in a pyramid close the checkout – this gives your customers a chance to slowly peruse the fun and unique package as they wait for their turn. It is also is a great way to encourage impulse sales. Make sure to keep counter area clean and inviting, and leave plenty of room for your customer to conduct their transaction.

7. Ask for Help
Don’t be afraid to ask your product manufacturers and distributors for visual merchandising help. They want you to sell as many of their products as possible  – so they are happy to collaborate with you to optimize the performance of their items. Many have planograms, displays, signage, hand-out cards, and other resources available to support your merchandising needs.
